Dress Appropriately For Business Casual Events




Dressing for a business conference can be a little unnerving. All business events used to require a professional dress code, but in todays culture, the rules are changing. If you have to attend a business conference with a casual dress code, do not worry. With a little creativity, you can dress casually without sacrificing professionalism.





Business conferences have started adhering to more casual dress codes in recent years, largely because of annoyed executives. Many business professionals dont enjoy attending conferences and over time, they have gradually started dressing casually to attend.





Over time, other companies began to follow suit until nearly all business conferences had transitioned to casual dress codes. Some companies are even scheduling their conferences in exotic locations to motivate professionals to attend. Who wouldnt want to go to a conference in the Caribbean? When the dress code is casual, you can get a sun tan while you listen to the guest speaker.





If you get invited to attend a casual business conference, follow a few fashion tips to make sure you are dressed appropriately.





First, when you are asked to dress in business casual attire, always wear a sport jacket. Sports jackets are a toned down version of a suit coat that can be worn with casual slacks instead of suit trousers. Every professional should invest in a nice navy blue or black blazer for use on casual dress days.





Pair your sport jacket with slacks that Trouwjurken 2013 dont match precisely but still look nice, like khakis, worsted wool, or gabardine. Jaded, boots with laces are easier than a zippered one. Zippered boots are iffy but do-able. Is there a lip that covers the zipper? Is the zipper pull a decent size or is yours like the older Paciotti style boots where the zipper is a poniard (dagger like)?





Paciotti had a nice collection some years back but their zipper pulls literally killed the possibly of wearing one for such an occasion unless you wanna have the updated mod/slim look of Hedi Slimane from a few years back.





I've always worn boots in a business casual format but usually the lace-up ones or a slip-on style (elastic on the sides) a la RM Williams or Weston. Another consideration is the type of soles you have on yours; traditional English style leather soles would help promote that business look.





About 15 years or so ago, Comme des Garcons (or was it Paul Smith?) introduced a line of shoes that included a black pair of boots that was High Low Schoolfeest Jurken French made, had leather soles with a steel zipper on the inside step that was covered by a lip. When you sat down, it Trouwjurken 2013 showed just a hint of the zipper enough to say dressy with a hint of bad boy.

The lip covers the coach boots, so that there is no visible zipper. The Florsheim Normandy boots do not have a facing. Both boots have the zipper featured on the interior side of the boot. They rise just above the ankle. Someone once told me the coach boots make me look like a fascist! I was wearing all black--but then again the code was business casual. Those days are over for me, alas!

Is it any wonder that Millennials entering the workforce in droves this fall will often choose to wear clothing so inappropriate as to be sent home to change? Look at their role models: super-geek gazillionaire internet start-up kings who often look as though they just rolled out of bed for the New York Times photo op. People instantly get the visual - young, enthusiastic, bright people who undermine themselves by wearing beachwear to the office. My advice to managers is, don't tolerate it, and to twenty-somethings, don't even think about it.





Just as individuals are able to set themselves apart by dressing up a notch, so too is the company that decides it will return to a more traditional look. Don't think for a moment that clients won't notice when the rumpled Lands' End shirts and khakis or jeans are traded in for, ok, maybe not an Armani suit every day, but a dress shirt, tie, trousers, socks and real shoes for gentlemen. Ladies have a bit more latitude, but please, I beg of you, no more exposed tummies, bare arms, cleavage or visible underclothes.





YOU are your brand - everything from your posture, your handshake, how you speak, and how you dress tells the world who you are. Like it or not, first impressions are made with lightening speed, well before the first word is spoken.





Each member of an organization, from the receptionist to senior management, in turn represents the corporate brand.
