More early March photos from the garden

My attention has been so focused on the snowdrops that I have failed to notice several other plants blooming in the garden in early March. Yesterday I took a stroll around and took a few photos. Here are some of the things I found:-

Various Crocus in the lawn and edges of borders

Crocus 'Tricolor' - this actually looks more impressive closed than open. I bought 50 bulbs and the mice ate most of them before I had a chance to plant them! Will mass plant a patch near Hellebores Galanthus next year.

Delicate Crocus tommasinianus self seeding around

Crocus on the grave of my dads beloved German Shepherd whose name was NADA. It used to be outlined in yellow Crocus. I can just about make out her name now. Every year we say we will patch it up but never have the Crocus in the right colours to do it while it is in flower.

A couple of Erica from the Heather family - close ups. I think these are Erica carnea 'Springwood Pink' 'Springwood White'

Daphne bholua 'Jacqueline Postill' in full bloom. The flowers of this gorgeous shrub are highly mouwloos avondjurken scented and very pretty. Actually 'highly scented' is an understatement - 'intoxicating' would be more descriptive.

A few Hellebores

Helleborus croaticus WM 9809 - this was collected and distributed by Will McLewin. It has the tiniest little flowers that look purple at first glance - but when you look inside the flower they are a beautiful bright green with purple veining. A delicate specie Hellebore which will look perfect with dainty snowdrops.

All the torquatus doubles from Montenegro were purchased from the wonderful Washfield Nursery many years ago. I would love to move them to a better position where they do not dry out in the summer so much - but I am terrified of losing them! They are not thriving where they are, but better alive than dead - they are very precious.

My seedlings from the above parents crossing with orientalis hybrids. A few of them have inherited the highly ornamental divided summer foliage of the torquatus. I will try to find a photo of the foliage in summer.

This is a purchased 'Party Dress' double which I bought to introduce dark doubles into my crosses. It has taken years to flower and does not have great performance, so I will not be using it for crossing - pretty though although I expected it to be very dark purple. The reddish colour is bruidsmeisjes jurken nice especially with sunlight from behind.

This is one of my very first crosses - a picotee. I ended up with many seedlings all looking very similar - some were stunning and others had too much green in the flowers.

x hybridus Picotee. I like this one as it has dark nectaries which match in with the purple veining. The flowers are large and deeply shaded on the outside of the petals.

I then crossed atrorubens (a tiny species plant smiliar to croaticus with a slightly bigger flower) with my Picotee.

This is the result:

It has pink backed petals with slight veining and inside is a pinky green shimmering colour wash with huge dark nectaries. In the summer it takes on the foliage of atrorubens and looks stunning. The flower is nothing special but I like its delicate colours and the fact that it is a specie x orientalis. It performs well and is even thriving in quite dark shade in some places in the garden.

Modesty Replacing Overexposure

Gone are the skin-centric, tummy-revealing and possibly private part-exposing trends that Spears and friends like Paris Hilton made ubiquitous. Instead, designers are embracing modesty, using sheer fabrics and lingerie looks to subtly hint at sexiness.

It's an extension of the ladylike trends for fall; designers seem to have made the collective decision that a lot of skin isn't in.

On Tuesday, Monique Lhuillier presented sophisticated, fluid looks that celebrate a woman's shape without squeezing it. Carmen Marc Valvo showed tasteful swimwear with plenty of coverage, flattering pintucks and low leg openings. Even pantyhose made a comeback over the weekend at the Derek Lam show.

Of course, every rule has an exception. Marc Korte Trouwjurk Jacobs bucked the trend on Monday with plenty of glimpses of bras, Vintage Trouwjurk slips and tap pants -- but the show was more of an Feest Jurken artistic statement than a presentation of wearable fashions.

New York Fashion Week wraps up Wednesday after an eight-day preview of the spring-summer looks of 100 or so designers.

But it looked like he could have used a little more time. Models were wearing what Jacobs called "scrap tops" and "one-half gowns" -- clothes that one presumes were left unfinished to make an ironic statement -- thus, giving the audience plenty of glimpses of their silk, satin and crepe bras, slips and tap pants.

On their own, individual elements of the outfits, such as a black lace cape or a moire sleeveless trench coat, were very attractive, but wearable clothes weren't the point here.

The entire show was staged backward, beginning with his bow, then the finale and then running through the looks, starting with No. 56 and ending with No. 1, a denim cape and sequined gown. Some of the shoes had heels built sideways into the uppers, while others skimmed so low on the heel they looked too small for the models.

Even with all this "message," the collection largely fit into some of the more important trends emerging from New York Fashion Week: color-blocking, sheer overlays, sequins, and nude and natural colors with bright pops from purple, pink and orange.

And now for something completely different: Calvin Klein's spring collection was neither feminine nor rich in detail. It wasn't candy-colored nor rooted in nature's neutral colors. No ruffles. No sequins.

The collection designer Francisco Costa turned out Tuesday had a unique streamlined and sophisticated look that had been virtually absent from the runways at New York Fashion Week, bucking every trend along the way.

Half the outfits were a creamy white color, and another, say, 25 percent were various shades of gray. The only pops of color came from a few green dresses near the end of the presentation, held in the sparse, industrial-looking ground floor of the company's Garment District office building.

The clothes, ranging from the opening ensemble -- a notch-collar seamless jacket with a stretch, string-back bodysuit and long, high-waisted pencil skirt -- to an almost floor-length satin organza dress with molded short sleeves, were serene and elegant.

A group of double-panel dresses were light and delicate, while the trouser looks, some with skinny legs, others with wide legs and all with high waists -- were long and lean.

The spring collection, however, strayed from the volume and all the jeweled embellishment that have been her hallmark in recent seasons, instead offering mostly sophisticated, fluid looks.

The last look might have been the best example: a black chiffon gown with a fitted corset bodice and a draped skirt that came together in a bow at the waist. There were plenty of more colorful options, including seafoam-colored chiffon strapless gown with draping all over the top -- down below the hips -- and then a billowy handkerchief hem and a nude-colored chiffon crisscross draped bodice gown.

These fashion confections -- inspired by Laduree macaroons -- carried through to some outstanding daytime outfits, including a light yellow metallic tweed suit with a shawl-collar jacket and a slim pencil skirt worn with a cream-colored V-neck halter blouse with ruffles down the front.

But even when you're dealing with such dainty, delicate details, there can be too much of a good thing and one dress -- a one-shoulder tulle gown with seemingly endless tiers covered with light green flowers -- was just too much of everything.

There's been a lot of talk about happy, sunny clothes as spring collections are previewed on the runway. But, until the Anna Sui show Monday night, there hadn't been many signs of happy, sunny models.

Apparently all it takes to make the catwalkers come to life are colorful wigs, playful clothes and a soundtrack that includes the old Andrews Sisters hit "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy."

The first look on the runway was a bolero with black sequins, a multicolored diamond-print blouse and plaid shorts. Is someone likely to wear it to work next season? Probably not, but it sure looks good on the runway.

For those who are indeed looking for Sui to provide real-world wardrobe solutions, she offered a plaid jacket-and-jumpsuit set -- worn with a colorful print blouse underneath -- as well as a white-and-black, Art Deco-themed dress. For parties, there were several pairs of flutter shorts with tiers of ruffles on the behind and a shirtdress with a plaid pattern featured on a sheer fabric.

A black-and-white striped sateen coat worn with a bow blouse and white linen shorts had a 1970s vibe, as well as many of the scarf- and shirtdresses done in prints with bold colors.

Two of the best outfits on the runway at the Bryant Park tents were a raw-silk officer's jacket in a sandy color with gold buttons, worn with a brown organza blouse with a cascading ruffle down the front and a tropical wool "mariner's" pants that hit mid-calf, and super-sophisticated organza trench coat in a light oyster color. The coat was paired with an attractive brief-style navy swimsuit, but it actually seemed a waste of such a good topper.

In his notes, Valvo said he aimed to craft clothes to dress the sirens of the sea, tempting them with seashell colors and mimicking the ocean's ripples with ruffles.

White silk gazar made a strapless corset with fanlike pleats light and airy, and it looked chic with black cocktail pants -- a pleasant break from the harder-to-wear cocktail shorts that have seem to have been all over other catwalks.

More modest wedding spending the trend

An IBISWorld industry survey has found that sluggish retail spending is flowing through to the wedding market and the number of marriage ceremonies is remaining largely static.

An estimated 119,000 couples will tie the knot in 2012-13, about the same number as in 2011-12.

The 2012 update on Australia's $4.4 billion wedding industry released on Wednesday found Australian couples spent $36,700 on average on weddings in 2011-12.

IBISWorld (Australia) General Manager Karen Dobie said the modest 1.4 per cent increase Grote Maten Trouwjurken was in line with sluggish growth across the retail sector.

"While unemployment remains low and disposable incomes continue to rise, we are opting to save rather than splurge more often than not," she said Feest Jurken in a statement.

The problem with this show wasn specific episodes which failed, because most of the episodes were consistent, but with recurring themes which were annoying. I could make a list of shows where Ray did something smart only to have it get turned around and have it be a stupid thing. Party Dress is a prime example. The whole show is about Ray not wanting to spend lots of money for a party dress for his daughter, which he finally does. This act of kindness is undone when they get to the party and find out that no one is wearing a party dress after all.

Or how about episodes where Ray has a feeling about something or someone but rather than support him the family ridicule him? In Ray expressed feelings about a mean lady and rather than support that the family accuses him of hating women. The worst thing is when the episode is over and it is revealed the woman is mean, he gets no apology. The same thing happens in Annoying Kid Ray thinks their friend child is annoying, and Debra accuses him of hating children this time. In the end it turns out he is annoying, and again no apology. Of course if Ray had a backbone and stood up for himself, there would have been no series because he would have thrown Debra out. Then there was "Homework" where Ray complained about the amound of homework is daughter got, and got stuck discussing with the education review board. Does Debra help? No she's a witch (oh I hate her, we'll get into that in a second) it's just easy to push Ray into it amd mock him for not wantting to do something he isn't even qualified to do!. And when Marie helps it just becomes another "Ray is an idiot" scene. Even when he gives the good speech at the end the creators had to un do it for one last laugh!

The worst frequent theme was what I call Debra episodes. Normally Debra was a rational person, frustrated and angry sure but within reason. Other times she is just mean, and then there are times when she is crazy. She is screaming like a lunatic and never takes responsibility for anything. I already talked about "Homework" where she makes Ray feel like a bad father for not wanting to speak up about the amount of homework their daughter gets, but does she help him or say anything herself? I like when Ray comes upstairs at the beginning after helping Ally and she in bed reading without a care. Then later when she doesn help she trots out the did laundry crap. How about Charity where she uses Robert to discourage Ray from volunteering at a hospital because it not convenient for her, even though she pushed him into it. There is one episode where Ray talking about how much he likes pickles and Debra starts baning her head in frustration at her idiot husband. Nice.

I know I am being hard on Debra but Marie could also get ridiculous. Marie had such a fragile ego that the slightest thing threatened it. What was worst, the family were petrified to do or say anything which could upset her. is a good example, Ally is finally old enough to babysit but don tell grandma! I mean, really? This happened so often I could be here all day. How about when Debra actually cooked something good, and Marie acted like her whole world was falling apart? Of course we had Robert's Wedding where interupts the freaking ceremondy so she can feel good that she aired her concerns before Robert got married. NEVER ONCE THINKING HOW IT MIGHT AFFECT ROBERT OR AMY!

Frank was the best character because he was a jerk, that was it. Sometimes they would pretend like he had en ego to bruise but that never really stuck. Robert was the mopy neglected brother, and we tolerated his mopiness because we could see that he did have a point. True he didn't have to use that to play the victim like he did, but it was still understandable.

This was a dysfunctional group, not helped by the fact there were no boundaries. However most of the time this craziness was balanced just enough to be tolerated and even funny. We could relate to the situation, well I could at least, and there was some good writing here. Of course, not all of them were and as I did some digging I realized there were a couple episodes which failed. They failed not because the characters were crazy, but for one reason or another the craziness was just over the top and it almost became uncomfortable. #5. Christmas Picture This is a bad episode disguised as a good episode. Everyone has had the experience of trying to get a family photo done, and this episode does a good job of showing the aggravation involved. The problem is with the way the conflict comes about. Ray decides to do portrait as his present to his mother. When Marie shoots down Debra idea regarding Christmas morning, she gets revenge by inviting her parents to sabotage shoot. It bothers me that she would do something so mean, it downright evil. She is using her parents to get back at Ray and then throws a fit because just has to get her way as always While there is no question Marie is a nuisance, I think she deserves the sympathy here. The gift was for her, and why in the world would she want Debra parents in a picture of her family? And Debra doesn even mention it to Ray, and tries to make it seem like it was perfectly understandable. Debra is just way out of line, and of course it Ray who suffers for it.

#4. Date for Peter Sometimes it was Ray who would get carried away and this episode is a prime example. Finally, an episode where Ray is the one who is way out of line. Peter is Robert brother in law, and apparently in an attempt to bring some old characters back this episode brings a few recurring characters in as possible dates for Peter. One is Peggy, who Ray had the fight with in It hard to describe you really have to see it, but Ray goes out of his way to try and prevent Peter and Peggy from hooking up, even though they get along great and no one is talking commitment or anything. They throw out every series cliche like Ray accuding Debra of wanting a soldier in her battle with Marie (which just sounds ridiculous). Ray is just dumb in this episode, the one bright side is the end where Ray apologizes and we see Peter and Peggy hooked up anyway. Funny, we never saw Debra apologize for anything.

#3. with Marie This episode is a bad episode just because it's a bad episode, simple as that. In Season 3 Patricia Heaton had given birth and needed to be written out for a few episodes. We were stuck with a couple of episodes with Ray and his family, and little or no Debra. Most of them were ok, although without Debra it didn feel like the same show. I complain about Debra but she was an integral part of the show's dynamic. This episode was the worst, having no Debra, and we see Ray and Marie on a cruise where Marie is popular to Ray chagrin. At home Robert is forced to look after Frank who's hurt himself. This episode is just boring and it feels like each character is out of character for the whole half hour.

#2. Bigger Person. At the end of season six, they did a three episode arc about Debra getting into a fight with Marie and they wind up not even speaking to each other. This just seemed wrong, I know this isn The Brady Bunch but it still a sitcom and to not have the problem resolved was just unsettling. This episode is the worst of the three, as the husbands try to take advantage of their wives feud and Robert gets in the middle. Debra and Marie are both unlikable. Marie even tells Ray to shut up, which seems so out of character it's incredible! At the end of the episode Ray tries to sneak off to golf, and Debra acts like she is going to beat the crap out of him. Not funny, if I want anger and tension I will just visit my own parent thank you very much.

Well, that my list. As you can tell, Debra was the one character who annoyed me. When she was pleasant and nice I liked her, but when she acted all nuts I hated her. All in all, the show was funny and relatable. The writing was sharp and the performances well done. I do think the show went on a season or two to long, but that ok.
